Jun 21, 2008: Photographer & Award-Winning Filmmaker, Arlene Bogna’s Safari Americana: Scenes Of Delight Photographic Solo Exhibit at Gallery 825 - Los Angeles Art Association
CA Photographer & Award-winning Filmmaker, Arlene Bogna’s Safari Americana: Scenes of Delight first solo photographic exhibit to be held at Gallery 825 on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 6pm – 9pm featuring large, special edition color photographs.
Bogna’s raw analog photographic exhibit explores our relationship with animals and our need for them in a whimsical, yet thoughtful fashion.
“Part social commentary about [the] role of animals in contemporary culture and part multi-media burlesque - Arlene Bogna’s Safari Americana: Scenes of Delight delights its audience with a myriad of narratives and constructs, all in service of a provocative yet successful formalism,” says Executive Director Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA) / Gallery 825, Peter Mays.
“In Safari Americana: Scenes of Delight, I wanted to explore this instinct of ours, a strange impulse to connect with, or show dominion over, our fictitious animal friends,” says Photographer, Arlene Bogna. “I created these photographs using toy cameras with experimental techniques, including cross-processing, light leaks, pushed colors, expired film, and custom printing to capture my memories with a sense of play and discovery.”
An award-winning Writer/Director and Photographer, Bogna has received two KidsFirst! Awards for her screenplay, Earth Kids, and a Telly, Platinum Best of Show Aurora, Davey, and Remi, for her narrative PSA, Canvas, she created for the art non-profit, A Window Between Worlds. Bogna’s art and film background includes fine art classes in color, composition, painting and drawing at The Art Center and Otis Parsons, film and media at the Universita di Bologna, Italy, culminating in a Film and Italian Literature degree from UCLA. She continues to expand upon her art education. For more information, go to www.arlenebognafineart.com.
Gallery 825 is located at 825 La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069. Free to the public, Safari Americana: Scenes of Delight exhibition runs June 21 – July 18, 2008. Valet parking is available. Jun 19, 2008: KLÜB at Actor's Gang
An existential comedy in which 10 highly dysfunctional performers must audition with their life stories to escape from a play in which they are trapped. Call it "A Chorus Line" in reverse.
"It's a crazy comedy about a group of actors, who all want to be famous and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their dreams - except take a hard look at themselves and their own abilities," says playwright Mitch Watson. "Anybody who has ever wanted to act or perform will recognize him/herself."
"Mitch is a terrific comedy writer - my forte is angst," laughs the director, Michael Schlitt. "With KLÜB, we’ve created a place where dreams go to die. The dreamers in this case are sad, desperate souls condemned to savage each other with petty snipes about the humiliations of their life's failures - and that, I think, is funny stuff."
"KLÜB takes no prisoners… [it's] far too funny and way too fast," wrote the Los Angeles Times.
"The Actors' Gang returns to its signature maniacal raw expressionism in this parody of showbiz ambition… a study of desperation and madness conceived with utmost integrity," said the LA Weekly.
"The Actors' Gang does it again with this bizarre, hilarious, offbeat comedy… director Mike Schlitt's speed-of-sound pacing makes writer Mitch Watson's absurdities even funnier," stated The Reader.
The Actors' Gang, founded in 1982 by a group of renegade theater artists, has over 100 productions and more than 100 awards to its credit, and consistently wins acclaim for its daring interpretations of Shakespeare, Buchner, Brecht, Moliere, Aeschylus, Ibsen and Chekhov, while also developing bold new plays that address the world today through a prism of satire, popular culture, and raucous stagecraft. The Gang is currently touring nationally with Michael Gene Sullivan's adaptation of George Orwell's "1984", directed by the company's artistic director, Tim Robbins, and recently completed international dates in New Zealand, Australia, and Hong Kong. Other Actors' Gang productions that have toured to cities across the U.S include Tim Robbins' "Embedded", Anne Nelson's "The Guys", and Jessica Blank's and Erik Jensen's "The Exonerated".
Performances of KLÜB take place Thursdays and Fridays 8pm and Saturdays at 8pm & 10:30pm, June 19 through July 19. Tickets on Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm are $25.00; tickets on Saturdays at 10:30pm are $15.00; all Thursday evening performances are Pay-What-You-Can.
The Actors' Gang is located in the Ivy Substation at 9070 Venice Blvd. (near the intersection of Culver and Venice Blvds.) in Culver City. Two hours free parking is available throughout downtown Culver City; the Ince Parking Lot (corner of Culver and Ince) is directly across the street from the theater. In addition, several restaurants (Italian, French, Thai, Japanese, and more) are only a few blocks' walk from The Actors' Gang and offer a variety of dining options before and after the theater. The Ivy Substation is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. For reservations and information, call The Actors' Gang Box Office at
310-838-GANG (310-838-4264) or go to www.theactorsgang.com.

Jun 6, 2008: Fishbone LIVE! at Shattuck Down Low Lounge

SUN HOUSE

SHATTUCK DOWN LOW

FISHBONE
Fishbone lives up to their legend as THE group to
bridge the gap between the funk of George Clinton and
the blare of Rush; a hybrid fusion where Led Zeppelin
and Sly Stone dance to a frenetic ska beat that fuels
the alternative thrust of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes
Addiction and the cast of Lollapalooza. From their
childhood together in the hardcore South Central Los
Angeles wasteland to years of forced school-bused
integration, Fishbones influences were kaleidoscopic
and never-ending. The band was formed in 1979 in the
ghettos of South Central Los Angeles. The group came
from the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the Red
Hot Chili Peppers and Janes Addiction. Fishbone first
gained attention with their unique live concerts,
earning a reputation as one of the most original bands
in the alternative genre. Their unique stew of
different styles, mixed with hectic energy and
pounding rhythms, were a huge influence on the
funk/rock/metal/rap genre that would become popular in
the 1990s. Live audiences around the world have been
surrendering to the bands stage flash and magical
rhythms with uninterrupted regularity. Such passionate
devotion is not lost on Fishbone, who refer to their
friends on the road as The Familyhood.

May 10, 2008: Learn to Chicago Step at Champions Studios
Chicago stepping is a name given to a dance that has evolved over the years from various other dances. Originally created in Chicago's predominately African American neighborhoods, the dance has morphed from its beginnings with the Jitterbug in the 30s and 40s, to the Offtime in the 50s, to the Walk and the Chicago Bop in the 60s and 70s.
The Chicago Step is now more widely known nationwide than it's ever been. Due to the popularity of songs like R. Kelly's "Step in the Name of Love", and Gerald LeVert's "Didn't We?", the nation has gotten a taste of the steppers style. Movies such as "Love Jones" (which depicts an event formerly hosted by local Chicago DJ Herb Kent, known as "The World's Largest Steppers Contest"), brought the dance and culture to the big screen. Stepping is usually coordinated into events called "Stepper's Sets", which typically cater to an older crowd. Due to the popularity of the aforementioned artists (along with old school artists), stepping is enjoying a nationwide "coming out party" with "Sets" popping up from New York to Los Angeles.
Danielle of MAK 3 Dance Club is inviting you to help get Rochester involved with the Steppin Community. Youve heard about Chicago, LA, Atlanta, NYC, even Buffalo, all of which have some of the best steppers in the country. Well, Danielle (who was trained by one of Chicagos best, Dave Maxx) will be teaching class every other Thursday at Venu. Make sure you tell all your family and friends and we hope to see you with your dance shoes on!!!!
(Dance partners welcome but not necessary)

Exhibition runs May 3rd through May 30th
Santa Monica, CA - Tarryn Teresa Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Gary Palmer. In this site-specific installation of his paintings, Palmer presents his work as a continuous line of interconnected canvases that wrap around the gallery walls. Palmer's uniqueresponse to the galleryspace highlightsboth his process as a painterand how this translates into theflowing, gestural nature of his work. The individual paintings are connected to create one unbroken landscape which is interpreted as a single, continuous black line of sumi ink.
